NSA Transition Programme

STEM Transition Programme (from KS2 to KS3)

Techniquest Glyndŵr’s “STEM Transition Programme” was a 27-month funded project delivering STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) activities to support students as they transition from primary school to secondary school.  The project ran from January 2016 to March 2018 and was funded by the National Science Academy in Wales.  This funding has allowed 100 primary schools and 27 secondary schools in North Wales to access our transition activities at no cost to the school or pupils.

There are four main aspects to the programme, which aim to support science transition and build upon Techniquest Glyndŵr’s links with schools in North Wales:

1. Lab Skills Days
Labs Skills Days take place at Techniquest Glyndŵr for upper KS2 pupils. The activities introduce pupils to practicing good laboratory safety, common laboratory hazards, and simple scientific tests using glassware and other laboratory equipment.

2. Support Resources
A support resource box is provided to one teacher per school accompanying pupils on a Lab Skills Day. The box includes teacher notes, student activity sheets and equipment to allow the pupils to carry out further investigations back at school.

3. STEM Enrichment Activities
Three STEM enrichment activities are available for delivery in secondary schools. The activities are designed for upper KS2 pupils to take part in alongside KS3 peer mentors. By running the activities in secondary schools, it allows primary pupils to prepare for the transition to a new school.

4. Professional Learning Events
Professional Learning Events for teachers are taking place throughout the project at locations across North Wales. Teachers are encouraged to share best practice regarding STEM transition and Techniquest Glyndŵr is compiling this into a booklet to be published before the end of the project. The events are also a great opportunity for teachers to hear about all the other aspects of the programme in more detail, ask questions, shape the resources Techniquest Glyndŵr produces and book their school for a Lab Skills Day or STEM enrichment activities visit.

From April 2018, all of the transition activities developed for this project will be available for schools in both Wales and England to book for their pupils.  Please see our Education pages for more information on these activities, which can be booked individually or as a whole day event.
