Young Chemistry Communicators
Young Chemistry Communicators is a project being rolled out by Techniquest Glyndŵr to enhance the public engagement skills of local sixth-form students and deliver chemistry related activities at events over the next two years.
The project is supported by the Royal Society of Chemistry through their Outreach Fund. Ten teams of students will take part between September 2016 to July 2017 and a further ten teams between September 2017 and July 2018.
Teams of sixth-form students from schools and colleges across North Wales and North West England will spend time with Techniquest Glyndŵr’s Science Communicator staff to learn the skills of public engagement. Then they will be assigned a Techniquest Glyndŵr mentor and set the challenge of creating their own resources to promote chemistry. Students will be given a budget to purchase equipment and consumables, with their travel costs also covered by the project. The exact nature of the resources and the age range they will be suitable for is entirely up to the teams!
Each team will choose an event suitable for testing out their new resources. They will be accompanied by Techniquest Glyndŵr staff and supported throughout the delivery with their chosen audience. Students that keep good records detailing their involvement in the project will have the opportunity to gain a CREST Gold Award.
The work with teams starts September 2016 and Techniquest Glyndŵr is keen to hear from interested schools, colleges and individual students throughout the lifetime of the project.
